Skin Products Are Not All Created Equal!
Is this Arctic Cold weather making your skin feel like the moisture is being sucked right out of it. Do you have rough, cracked feet, heels, fingers and elbows? You are not alone. This cold, dry weather is really hard on most people's skin and people with normally dry skin suffer even more. And the skin on our face is the most delicate, sensitive of all. What's my point? Good skin product is critical. Legally products sold in drugstores or over the counter are limited in the percentage of active ingredients they can contain. Doctor's offices can sell products that have a much higher percentage of active ingredients because they are sold under the Physician's medical and prescription license. You probably already know that many products sold over the counter can be pretty expensive. It is not unusual to spend 40 dollars or more on a face cream for "aging" skin.. For the same amount, or only slightly more, you can purchase from our office skin products that have the highest percentage of retinal, glycolic, hyaluronic acids etc. that are scientifically proven to protect and improve skin tone and elasticity. It's a great idea for a Christmas gift, too. Or if you don't know which product to choose as a gift for someone, a gift certificate is a great idea. Do your research. Good skin care products can make an incredible difference in how your skin looks and feels.

Christmas Gifts?
Can't figure out what to give your wife or girlfriend for Christmas? In the past you've done the perfume, jewelry, scented candles, sweater thing, but you'd like something different? Well, how about a gift certificate to the Spa? I have never met a woman who wouldn't want to be pampered with a massage or a facial., We can even shape her eyebrows while she's here. And you don't even have to be specific about what services you want to give. You just give her the gift certificate and let her choose. It's a win-win situation. (You still have to wrap it in a nice box or bag, with tissue and ribbon though)

Arms That Just Keep Waiving!
Nothing says "I'm getting old" faster than loose, wrinkly upper arms. Few people are aware that upper arm brachioplasty (arm lift/tuck) is becoming one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the United States. It is a wonderful surgery that tightens up and shapes those very out of shape arms. The number of brachioplasties has increased dramatically in the last 4 years. If you're tired of spending the summer months in long, HOT sleeves in order to cover up your embarrasment, and making wardrobe choices that aren't particularly stylish, simply to camoflague those "waiving" upper arms, know that there is a solution. A great solution. As more and more people are becoming aware that there is a surgery for this problem, they are signing up. It makes your arms shapely, and youthful again. Ask questions and find out if this might be just the thing for you.

Skin Cancer Epidemic
When a lot of us were in our teen years, we thought that "sunscreen" was a dirty word. We would smear all kinds of potions (like baby oil, iodine, crisco) on our skin and lay out for hours in the hot, hot, sun to see just how burned we could get. Tan was in. The goal was to have the deepest tan around. Well...now we're paying the price for that little bit of vanity. We know that the skin cancers that are showing up now are a result of sunburns that we got before we were 20 years old. It's really important to be vigilant in watching for changes in lesions that we might find on our skin. Changes in size, shape, coloration, bleeding, itching are all things that we need to be aware of. A mole doesn't have to be huge and scary looking to be a problem. A dangerous melanoma can be a small , benign looking lesion. There is a strong family genetic influence in the occurrence of melanoma. If you have a blood relative with a history of melanoma that is another reason to be alert. Problems that are spotted early can be dealt with relatively quickly and easily. Basal cell, squamous and melanomas that have been ignored for a long time can be quite problematic to take care of requiring major excisions, and tissue reconstruction procedures to close. Be aware of your skin. Make it a regular practice to examine moles and funny patches on your skin. You are the best judge of what is normal and what is not. Do not wait until a lesion becomes a major problem. If you have concerns, see a dermatologist and have him map your moles and determine if he thinks something needs to go. If you've had a skin cancer previously you need to be doubly aware.

Specials!
You may not be aware, but Dr. Sellers is always having a special on the surgical fee of a given surgery at a given time. You can find out about these specials by visiting our web page at sellersplasticsurgery.com. For example, right now and until November 15th there is a 10% discount on the Doctor's fee for breast augmentation surgery. You could use the savings to buy new clothes to go with your new shape! Our Spa also has their own specials going all the time. This month we are having a special on IPL treatments. What is IPL you ask? Well, it's Intense Pulse Light treatment. It's a light laser that goes down into the deep layers of the skin and destroys pockets of melanin that form discolorations and uneveness in your skin. These "spots" then work their way to the surface where they slough off leaving you with a smoother, clearer, skin tone. If you're bothered by a lot of spots and discolorations in your skin this my be the treatment for you. It really is a wonderful way to reduce pigment problems in your skin. IPL's are usually $300 each, but right now we are running a special of $245 per treatment, or a series of 3 for $600. That's a $300 savings to you! AND, we are including a Pigment Regulator by Skin Ceuticals for free as our gift for you. The regulator is a fabulous addition to the IPL treatments as it's job is to continue to work on the excess melanin in the skin that form discolorations. It will help you to keep the wonderful result you have achieved from the IPL's. Call now for an appointment. If you've been considering having your breast surgery anyway, you might as well do it now and get the savings!

Making It Happen
For many (if not most) of us, $ 10,000 for a cosmetic surgery is a bit more than we can work into our budget. But, more and more patients are finding that there are options that make the surgery they want now a possibility now. Often, if you wait until you have the money, you're too old to have the surgery. There are financing options available to bridge the gap. If a large lump sum is an impossibility for you, perhaps a reasonable monthly payment is an option. Have the surgery now so you can enjoy it now. Call our office for more information or go on line to Sellersplasticsurgery.com and go to financing options for more information.

Eyelashes and Latisse
Remember when you were young, and you could go out without any makeup and look fresh and glowing. A tiny bit of eye shadow and a little lip gloss and you were on your way? Does it take you at least an hour now to get ready for being seen in public? Well, one thing that makes our eyes beautiful and makes them stand out are dark, long, full lashes. Mascara is a life saver, but when your eyelashes get so thin and short and colorless that even two coats of mascara isn't helping you need to look into Latisse. It's fabulous for actually making your lashes longer, darker and fuller. And it's so easy to use. It really won't take any more time in your busy day. And it can make such a huge difference. It's a product that actually does live up to it's hype. It now comes in two sizes. Treat yourself. Come try it you won't believe the difference it will make.

The Post Baby Belly
I remember coming home from the hospital after my last baby and thinking that was great to be thin again. Then trying to put on my pre-pregnancy jeans and thinking "What has happened?!" While I was pregnant some one snuck in and took all of my clothes in! What a cruel joke! I actually know very few people (except those in People Magazine) that actually return, after pregnancy, to their pre- baby bodies. Even if you weigh the same, it's not in the same place. Abdominal skin that has been stretched out is rarely the same taught, flat, non-wrinkled skin it was before. Sometimes it will do pretty well with the first baby, but usually by two or three your abdomen just gives up. ( and who can blame it) The bad news about stretched out skin is that there are not enough sit ups in the world to tighten it. The only way to get rid of extra skin is to cut it out. The good news is that a skilled, artistic, experienced plastic surgeon can give you your flat, tight tummy back. We see so many moms who are spending hours and hours at the gym working on abs and who are so discouraged because they still have that "doughy" skin on their abdomens. They actually do have "abs of steel" but they are buried under a layer of loose, wrinkled tummy. Don't continue to be discouraged. Come see us and find out what can be done.

What a Woman Wants
Some people may not be aware, but the final results from cosmetic surgery do not come instantly post surgery. Breast surgery especially takes several days, to weeks, (sometimes a couple of months) for the final contour to appear. The skin needs to relax, and swelling needs to recede before the final result can be realized. So, If you'd really like to have nice, full, perky, shapely breasts again in time for the holidays, now is a good time to get things underway. Surgery done now will give your body time to recover for a beautiful holiday season. Don't wait. (Although, there's nothing funner than getting a breast augmentation from Santa for Christmas!)

Price Matching Policy
Because we know that the cost of cosmetic surgery is a significant factor in the decision about whether or not to have surgery, we offer to our patients a special Matching Price offer. This means that if a patient can bring in another Board Certified Plastic Surgeon's written price quote for the same surgery that you would like Dr. Sellers to do for you, we will do our best to match that price. We cannot control the fees for the Hospital and the Anesthesia, but we can help with the Surgeon's fee. The price quote must be within one month of our quote. So, if you've seen Dr. Sellers and have decided that you really, really would like him to do your surgery, but you went to Dr. ? and his price quote is $500.00 less, bring in your quote and let's see what we can do to make your surgery a reality. There may be times that there are factors that make it difficult, but let us try. We really do want to help you get the procedure that you've been dreaming about.

Leggins!
One of the latest trends in fashion is leggins and tights. They look great with a long tunic or sweaters. If you would love, love love to wear a pair but your legs are not now "leggin" worthy perhaps now would be a great time to have that liposuction shaping that you've been dreaming about. Liposuction can remove the fat from difficult areas such as the outer thigh, inner thighs and shape the top of the knee to make a more slender more shapely leg. You don't have to be your "ideal " weight to have it done either. Come get your questions answered. You might find that with some of our financing options you can make it happen. (there are only about two women in the world that would not benefit from inner thigh liposuction ....the rest of us, well....)

Long, Beautiful Lashes
Struggling with thin, sparse, too- light- to- see eye lashes? There is something that can make a huge difference. Latisse by Allergan is a wonderful solution that actually works. Just put one drop along your upper lash line each night before bed and in 6 weeks time you will see darker, longer, thicker sexier lashes. It's a product that actually works. It's not just a conditioner, it actually acts on the eyelash to prolong the growth stage thus keeping the eyelash growing longer. It's actually scientifically and medically proven and approved by the FDA. It makes a great gift, too.

Add To Subtract
One of the comments we hear from women all the time after they've had breast augmentation surgery is that they have had lots of people ask them if they've lost weight. Adding some volume to the breasts creates a balance to their hips and gives them that hourglass shape that most women are going for. That contour makes the waist and hips actually look much thinner and the overall shape much more attractive. So adding a little to the breasts makes it look like you've taken away from the rest of the body. It's a beautiful thing.

A Minute For Yourself
Well, summer's almost over. Seems like we just get Memorial Day over and it's back to school shopping. Summer is usually filled with camps, movies, vacations, swimming, picnics, hikes---go, go, go. Though it's wonderful to have the long hours of daylight and less restrictive schedules, it's not so back to get back in to a routine. With the kids back in school (already or very soon) we have a chance to sit still for a minute and catch our breath. You might find a minute to think about yourself for a change. Now's a great time to have that tummy tuck or breast lift. You can have some peace and quiet to recover in. If you've been putting it off because life's been so hectic, take a breath and think about what you'd like to do. If you have your surgery now you'll be in great shape for the holidays, which will be upon us before we know it!

Breast Reduction Relief
Many women suffer with constant back and neck pain from large, heavy breasts. Bras are very expensive for huge breasts and, lets face it, are usually more industrial looking than pretty. Women get deep shoulder grooving from the pull of their bra straps as the bra tries to hold the breasts up. Many women with large, heavy breasts suffer with constant headaches and neck strain. Many women with large, pendulous breasts would love to get more exercise, but jogging, walking and going to the gym are very uncomfortable and in many cases embarrassing. If you are one of these women you should look into breast reduction surgery. It is a wonderful procedure for re-shaping and positioning the breasts as well as reducing them to a comfortable, natural size that fit your body. Patients report that it is actually less painful than even a breast augmentation, too. Get your questions answered. Don't suffer needlessly. Insurance companies are getting much more willing to pay for breast reduction, too.

Latisse Lashes
There's nothing like long, dark, full lashes to give your eyes and face a boost. As we age our eyelashes usually thin and fall out more easily. They often grow stubby and lighter in color. Sometimes by the time we're 50 we don't have much in the way oif lashes left. Eyeylash extensions are expensive and require a trip to a technician regularly to keep them up. Latisse by Allergan is a miracle for growing longer, fuller , darker lashes. It really works. You just brush (with a tiny brush which is included) on the base of the upper lash line each night before bed. (No need to apply to the lower lashes. There's enough that seeps from the upper to the lower while we sleep to take care of them). Your lashes will stay in the growth stage longer , thus making you lashes longer and fuller. The bonus is that it usually darkens them as well---like natural mascara. You must either have a prescription for Latisse or purchase it from a physician's office. Give it a try. You'll be very pleased with the results.

Skin Care Products
So you'd really like to have some cosmetic surgery done, but right now the cost is just not in your budget. What can you do in the meantime to give yourself a boost and make your skin look fresher and healthier? Good skin products can be very effective in giving your skin it's youthful glow back. No amount of retinol or Vitamin C is going to turn the clock back 20 years, but using quality, concentrated products on your skin can have a huge affect on the health of your skin--and healthy, glowing skin looks lot younger and more vital than dull, tired skin. Talk to a qualified aesthetician with expertise in skin products to see which ones would suit your individual needs. Everyone's skin is quite unique and demands a unique approach. Everyone over 45 should be using some kind of Vitamin A or C product for skin thickening and increased cell turn over, which helps reduce wrinkles and discourages new ones from forming. Quality cleansers and moisturizers are a must. A micro scrub product to exfoliate and smooth is fabulous. If you have acne prone skin there are products that help sooth and camoflauge those problems. There are products with antioxidants that protect against damaging free-radiacals. And don't forget sunscreen. There are some high SPF products now, that work great under make-up. If you can't afford the surgery right now, at least get started on skin products that can improve your skin now and protect from damage in the future and give you a boost until you can afford that surgery you want.

Arthritis And Your Hands
As we age, almost all of us get arthritis in one joint or other. Some people seem to be cusrsed with some level of arthritis damage in almost all of their joints. We see some older folks who have very little arthritic change in their hands and some 50'sh patients who have totally destroyed joints all over. There are several factors that influence this: age, use paterns, other diseases, and of course there's that genetic thing. Whatever the cause, or even the severity of the damage be aware that there are things that can help with the loss of strength and motion, and the sometimes constant pain. There is something that can be done for every joint of the hand. If you were having arthritic trouble with your knee or hip, you'd think nothing of seeing an orthopedic surgeon for a knee or hip replacement. But, somehow we don't think about putting a new joint in a painful , stiff finger or rebuilding that non-functioning base joint in the thumb. You owe it to yourself to look in to the treatment of these challenging problems. Just because you're getting older doesn't mean that you have to accept the diminshed use and quality of life that functioning hands can offer. Come see Dr. Sellers. Know what your options are. Don't live with pain and loss of function needlessly.

Breast augmentation
Do you sit at the edge of the pool or beach and envy other women who seem to have the right breast to hip proportions? Are you embarassed that you are as flat as the lounge chair you are sitting in? Breast augmentation is one of the most common cosmetic procedures done in the world. So, you aren't alone. It's a relatively minor surgery, too. Recovery is minimal. Imagine not needing that padded bra ever again! Most women who have breast augmentation actually look like they have lost weight. Dr. Sellers works diligently to help you pick the size implant that flatters you and balances out your hips giving you the nicest proportions possible. The final decision is always yours, but we will give you your options. Women now, also get the option of saline or silicone implants. There are circumstances when either one is appropriate. Don't hide under baggy, shapeless tops hoping to deflect noticing your flatness with your witty personality. Have both--look into augmentation.

Liposuction
I love liposuction. It does what months sweating in the gym cannot do. Some people spend enormous amouonts of time trying to get rid of those saddle bags with little to show for it. Sometimes we are just genetically programmed to keep those fat pockets where they are. Those fat cells defend their turf with almost militant zeal. So, what's the answer? Well, the defiitive solution is to get rid of those pesky fat cells once and for all. If they are physically removed they can trouble you no more. They can't fill up with fat again, because they aren't there. It's a beautiful thing. Don't get me wrong. It's vital to health and well being to get proper exercise and to eat a well balanced diet. Being the best you can be physically enhances all areas of your life. It's something to consider. At least get your questions answered.

Summer Sun and Skin Cancer
Well, it's starting to feel more like summer everyday. (Even though one day it will be 90 degrees and the next could be in the 40's--that's springtime in the Rockies) But, sunny days are ahead. With the summer weather comes the tank tops, capris, shorts, and yes, swimming suits and bikinis. Feeling the sunshine on your skin can be for many an almost religious experience: hence the term, sun worshiper. But, modern medical research reminds us that we have to protect our skin from the damaging rays of the sun. Not just the aging rays that over time can make your face look like an old boot, but even more critical are the rays that cause skin cancer. Now's a good time, while you have more exposed skin, to really examine your skin and check for unusual moles or lesions. Is there a new one that you swear wasn't there 6 months ago? Have any spots changed in size or color or shape since the fall? Do you have a sore that just won't heal no matter what you do? Any of these can be warning signs that should not be ignored. If you have a concern, please see a skin specialist and have him evaluate your situation. I have seen big, scary looking lesions that turned out to be nothing and little, very benign looking lesions that turned out to be very serious indeed. Be aware of your skin. Skin cancer is a serious issue to be dealt with. Don't wait and see. Act.

Breast Cancer Awareness
A big story in the news this week is that the actress,Angelina Jolie had prophylactic bilateral mastectomies in
April. She didn't do it because she had breast cancer, but because she was tested and found positive for the BRAC-1 gene. It is a mutant gene that is hereditary and that signals the increase in the potential for breast cancer sometime in a woman's life to up to 87%. The gene also increases the risk of ovarian cancer, the cancer that Angelina's mother died from at the age of 56. After careful research and consulting with a number of specialists, she and her family decided that having the breast mastectomies now was an important step in protecting her future health. However you feel about this story, it at least has opened up people's thinking about this issue. Right now the test for the BRAC-1 gene is quite expensive. Certainly at this point not everyone would be able to afford the test or even be recommended to have the test. This is an opportunity for every woman to consider her own situation and consult with her own physician about what her options and needs are. Bilateral prophylactic mastectomies are certainly not for everyone, but are worth discussing if heredity and health history dictate. Be active in guarding your own health.

Huntsman 140
One of Dr. Sellers' great passions is bike riding. He logs many, many miles every week on his trusty road bike. It is very common for him to work an 8-9 hour day in the operating room and then go for a 50-60 mile bike ride to "relax". Another passion of his is finding a cure or better treatments for cancer. In our practice we see the results most often of breast cancer, but other cancers also have devastating affects on peoples' lives.
During the week of June 10th, Dr. Sellers will be riding in the Huntsman 140. It is a bike ride from Reno, Nevada to the Huntsman Cancer Center in Salt Lake City. We are asking any of you out there that have been affected by cancer yourself, or know a loved one or friend who has battled this terrible disease to pledge funds for Cancer Research at the Huntsman Cancer Institute. Researchers are getting closer everyday to finding an answer, but it's a slow, expensive process. Take the time now to pledge your support. Every little bit helps in the fight against this terrible enemy.
You can go online at http://140kintera.org/docdansellers or you can also go to www.huntsmancancer.com, click on the 'Donate Online Now" button. Please comment that the payment is in sponsorship of Dr. Dan Sellers' Ride. Thanks for your support.

Raise Your Hand
Did you know that Plastic Surgeons are Hand specialists, too? Hands are incredibly intricate and technical. Right up a Plastic Surgeon's alley. Plastic Surgeons have the same training that an orthopedic Doctor has. If you have arthritic changes in your hands, pain, loss of motion and strength or accidentally put your hand in the lawn mower you might be really pleased with your care from a boad certified Plastic Surgeon. Dr. Sellers did an additional year long fellowship in hand surgery when he finished his Plastic surgery training. So many people go through life in terrible pain and inconvenience because they've been told by someone that "nothing can be done about arthritis. You just have to live with it." That is a terrible disservice to people and a totally false statement. Actually, there are a myriad of things that can be done for pain, numbness, and weakness of the hand. At least check with a surgeon about your options. Hands are vital to your quality of life. Make sure that yours work as well as possible.

It's Only Skin Deep
Any aesthetician, dermatologist, or plastic surgeon will tell you that a good skin care regimen is vital in looking bright and vibrant and healthy and young! So what does that entail? Well, first of all a good cleansing every night before bed. It is really an important step to clean all the pollution, sweat, dirt, day-old makeup, etc. that we come in contact with everyday each night before bed. It opens up the pores and allows the skin to breathe while we sleep. Going to bed with all that gunk on our skin is asking for dull, lifeless skin prone to breakouts. There are many different types of skin. Most skin is a combination of several. Is you skin dry? Oily? Acne prone? Getting older? Wrinkles? Uneven skin tone? Splotchy? or a combination of several of these and several other traits? You may not even know for sure how to catagorize your skin., There are a myriad of products out that will help you find a skin program that you can live with. Most people need some kind of moisturizer after cleansing. There are products tht fight free radicals and prevent damage. Don't forget sun screen--another absolutely vital daily product. There are products that get down into the collagen layers of the skin and make the skin thicker and more elastic. There are products that can bleach out skin discolorations and even out skin tone. There are products with glycolics or AHA's that exfoliate that dead layer of skin that hangs around on the surface. It's a great idea to come in and talk to one of our master aestheticians about a program that will be unique to your specific needs. And by the way, you are never too old, or too young to start on good skin products. Over time, the benefits of good protective skin care are immeasurable.

The Grass is Always Greener
Isn't it wonderful that we're all so different. Life would be boring if we were all 5'9" tall, weighed 130 pounds and had long blond hair and deep blue eyes. How awful would that be? Well, anyway......
In no way is our uniqueness more evident than in breast size. Even in the same family, some girls may have very large breasts while their sisters or mothers have very small breasts. Fortunately, both conditions can be fixed. It's also interesting that small busted women seem to envy their larger breasted counterparts and can't understand why anyone would want to get a reduction. While large busted women would often gladly trade their large breasts for their sisters very small ones. Breast reduction surgery gives wonderful relief of the back, neck and headaches that carrying around extra breasts often cause. Shoulder grooving from industrial strength bras will not be missed. Fitting better in "cute" clothes is wonderful. Breast implants for those who are often mistken for their little brothers is an incredible moral booster. So, unless you are one of the lucky ones that are "just right", you might look in to seeing what can be done surgically to make you a happier, healthier you.

Men, Too
Cosmetic surgery has sometimes been thought of in the past as something only women would be interested in. But more and more men are looking in to enhancing their appearance. Just like women, many men would benefit from an eyelid lift, or chin lipoisuction. Lots of men have fat in areas that they don't want it. Liposuction can tame "spare tires" around the middle and give a more youthful stomach. Face lifts can make a man look younger and fresher, too. So, you men out there, don't be timid. We see men everyday that are interested in feeling and looking better and want to know what kinds of procedures can be done to help them achieve their goals. Come in and get your questions answered. Now's the time.

Financing that Cosmetic Procedure
Have you been dreaming of having a cosmetic procedure for a long time, but realize that you simply cannot come up with the several thousand dollars that it might take in a lump sum? You may not be aware that there are several companies out there that specialize in financing medical or cosmetic procedures . This is a wonderful option that allows you to pay for the surgery you want and need now over time. Many people find that when broken down in reasonable monthly increments the surgery they want can be realized now rather than waiting months or years to save up the total amount. In our office we use Care Credit and Advance Care. Both are great options. You can find their links on our web site www.sellersplasticsurgery.com. You just go to their sites and put in the information and they will give you your financial options. If you have been really frustrated about the money side of surgery, look into financing it over time. We have many patients that are using one or the other of these options and have been delighted to find that they can make their dream a reality now. It's certainly worth looking in to. Maybe it's the answer for you, too.

Check Your Skin Regularly
Many of us over 50 (and sometimes even younger) are finding that we are developing more and more crusty little lesions on our skin. We may find that we seem to be getting more and more moles or age spots on our skin. When we were young unfortunately sun screen was a dirty word. How many remember putting crisco on our skin and laying out in the sun for hours on end to develope that dark brown tan? Brown was beautiful. But, now we are paying the price for those dangerous habits. Skin cancers are epidemic. There are three main kinds of skin cancers: basal cells, squamous cells , and the most dangerous melanoma. Each of these need to be teated: melanoma being the most serious of the three. It can kill. So, watch for signs that a lesion or mole might be problematic. Such things as a lesion that never seems to heal, is getting bigger, itches constantly, has irregul shape or color should be lookd at by a professional. If you have a concern, please check it out. Especially if you have a family history of skin cancer, such as melanoma, or know that you really abused your skin in the sun when you were younger. It is far better to go to a Dermatologist or Plastic Surgeon and find out that a sore or mole is really nothing, than to wait until it's too late to have the proper treatment. Reconstruction is far less invasive when the lesion is small. Don't wait. Check it out!

Reconstruction After Breast Cancer Surgery
We have seen two patients lately who have had mastectomies previously for breast cancer. Surgery for both patients was done several years ago and no reconstruction was attempted at the time. They went through the post surgical treatment of chemo or chemo and radiation therapy. They both had the same misconception. They both thought that because it had been over 3 years since their cancer diagnosis and treatment, the isurance would probably not pay for reconstruction now. This is actually not true. In 1998 when the legislature passed the Women's Health Act there was no deadline put on post cancer reconstruction. Insurance companies were mandated to pay for reconstruction on the affected breast and treatment on the contralateral breast to bring the breasts into symmetry. If you find yourself in a similar situation, and thought the same thing, please know that you may still be able to have reconstructive surgery to reconstruct and revise your breasts. The first step is to see a board certified Plastic Surgeon and see what your options are. It could open up a whole new world to you.

That "Tire" Around Your Middle
If you are over 45 years old ,you may have noticed that you have started putting weight on around your waist, even those of you who have always had a thin waist. Why is that you wonder? Well, as we get older and start going through "the change" our hormone levels change. Our estrogen levels start to reduce, but our male hormone levels (yes we all have those too) stay the same. The balance is different than when we were younger. Where do the majority of men carry their weight? Most men carry their extra weight around their middles, or in their upper body. Women traditionally carry their weight in their thighs and hips. (This is just a broad statement of course, there are lots of exceptions) At any rate, at about 45 and up, women often start to get thicker around their abdominal area because of this hormone balance change and this weight is very difficult to lose. Women become very discouraged. No amount of time in the gym seems to help. But, do not despair. Liposuction around the abdomen and flanks can help give you back your youthful tummy. We have many patients come in that are not heavy anywhere else who want to fix this area. Liposuction can be the miracle their looking for. Now, if you have a lot of extra weight and your skin has been stretched out for years and years liposuction alone may not be sufficient. Many times removal of the excess, stretched out skin is necessary as well. A body lift, abdominoplasty, or mini-tummy tuck may be needed in addition to liposuction to achieve the best result. So if you are really discouraged with your tummy and are trying really hard with diet and excercise and not seeing results you should consider at least consulting with the Doctor and seeing what options there are. It can make an incredible difference in the way you feel about yourself and life in general. We see so many women who have these procedures that have such a change in their confidence and happiness in general. It can be life changing.

Sun at Last!
Finally, the end of a long cold, gray, snowy winter is in sight. I have even seen some little flowers braving the cold and poking up out of the ground. The weather in Utah is fairly unique I think. Just 10 days ago it fell to 23 degrees in the night and only got up to 35 in the day. And now this week, we've had two days so far that have broken records for highs this early in the year at 74 degrees. Crazy! It's a great time to be reminded of the importance of using sunscreen regularly. I love to feel the warmth of the sun on my face, but I hate the damage it can do. And though it's really critical to protect your skin all year round in all weather , it is absolutely essential to wear sunscreen in the spring and summer months when the sun's rays are stronger. Don't let the weather decide whether you will wear your sunscreen. Just put it on every morning. The greatest damage that we suffer to our skin is always from the sun. And it's the easiest danger to protect against. And hats seem to be making a comeback. A cute hat that keeps the sun off your face can be a fashion statement as well. And this advise is not just for women. Men may need to be even more vigilant than us ladies because often their occupations take them outdoors more often. Lastly, suncressn and sunblock products do lose their potency over time. I like to throw out last year's and start fresh every spring. I understand that if you keep your suncreen in a cool, dark place it stays potent longer---but that doesn't sound like the beach to me. You may need two different products--one for face that makeup will work with and one for bodies. Remember--sunscreen everyday. It'll be worth it!

Liposuction Facts
Did you know that you have most of the fat cells you will ever have by the time you are about 2 years old? After that we fill them up and empty them out depending if we lose or gain weight. When you remove fat cells from a trouble spot, they are no longer in that area in the same proportion. While it would be impossible to remove every single fat cell from an area (we have trillions of fat cells) if you remove, say, two thirds of them, you could never have the same shape, even if you gained 5-10- pounds. So, liposuction is a wonderful, definitive solution to those inner thighs or saddle bags on the outer thighs that no amount of exercise will ever be able to eliminate. It's an amazing feeling.

Happy Valentine's Day
Are you struggling to find a gift for your special sweetie? Are you trying to be a little more original than the flowers and chocolates that you've given her for the last 7-8 years? Here's an idea. How about a gift certificate for a treatment in our medi-spa? There's a myriad of treatments to choose from--a restful full face facial, a microdermabrasion, and hair removal treatment, even eyebrow waxing is a fun treat for us girls. So, don't limit yourself with the same old flowers and candy (although chocolates in addition to your other gift is always appropriate), branch out and consider a gift certificate at our medi-spa. She'll thank you. (Did you know we have a lot of men who love to visit the spa, too)

Breast Cancer Reconstruction
Did you know that by law insurance companies have to pay for breast reconstruction surgery after breast cancer procedures? Even if the procedure was a lumpectomy and not a full mastectomy you may qualify for insurance coverage for reconstruction. Also, the surgery to bring the non-affected breast into symmetry to the reconstructed breast is also covered. There is not a time limit to the reconstruction. If you had the mastectomy several months or even years before and now want reconstruction, that is covered. There may be some restrictions, but they are few. If you have been through breast cancer surgery in the past, or need to have a mastectomy or lumpectomy in the future you might consider breast reonstruction. Breast cancer is a terrible, horrible disease, and sometimes, thinking about making decisions about reconstruction at the time seem overwhelming. But, wherever you are in the process, breasts are part of what makes a woman. Reconstruction may not be for every woman, but you owe it to yourself to find out what the options are.

Love those Lashes!
I have had three people in the last 2 weeks look at my eyes and ask if I have artificial lashes or lash extensions. Wow. Actually, my longer, fuller lashes are just the result of using Latisse Eyelash serum for the last 6 months. It is refreshing to find a product that actually fulfills or even surpasses expectation. It's really a great product. It would make a fabulous gift--to give to someone you love or even to yourself. (We even have a few tricks to make it go much farther than it says on the package) You ought to give Latisse a try. It's great!

Don't Breath the Air!
Could the weather BE anymore miserable and depressing? I'm sure the people in the Hurricane Sandy's path might argue, but the rest of us are really getting tired of it. Are you dreaming of lying in the sun, warm and lazy? Is part of your dream that you're svelt and buff? Now's the time to look at getting something done if you want to look fabulous by swim suit season. As unbelievable as it seems right now, one day the sun will come out again, the snow will melt, the grass will grow and we'll break out our summer clothes again. Just hang on. (In the meantime if you're considering it, you ought to prepare to look good in those summer clothes.) Remember, surgical results take time for the maximum improvement. Don't wait too long.

Winter Pampering
The weather outside is just awful. Cold, gray, smoggy---just plain bleak. And it's probably going to be a while before things change either for the better or even worse. Give yourself a little boost by coming in and spending an hour with one of our aestheticians. Nothing like a little pampering to lift the spirits. Whether it's a microderm treatment or a spa facial, it's a great way to spend a little time. Give your skin a little break from the dry, stale, indoor air that seems to suck the moisture and life out of our skin this time of year. It's even a real boost to have your eyebrows professionally done. Even little things make us feel more chipper. So be kind to yourself. If you can't afford a facelift right now, come get a facial. Get yourself a new skin product that will replace the moisture and improve the texture of your skin. You'll may even feel better about the weather.

Protect that Skin from the Sun
Did you know that even in cloudy weather your skin is subject to the damaging affects of the sun's harmful UVB and UVA rays? The most important product for protection against aging you can put on your skin is sunscreen. Rain or shine, hot or cold, old or young sunscreen is a must. Many assume that if you can't see the sun, the sun can't see you. Use your sunscreen like medicine. Use it every day even on days you think you'd be fine without. You'll be glad you did. Sun damage really is cummulative. (Meaning it adds up) You may not be able to do much about your genetics, pollution or location, but you can protect against damage from the sun. We have several very good sun protection products in our office. Call the aesthetician and ask which one would suit your needs best.

Momentary Relapse
So, are you one of those who sorta' let your fitness rules go for the last 6 weeks? Did your gym membership gather dust on the shelf. (Can you even find your gym membership card?) Did you stop worrying about whether M & M's were part of a healthy breakfast or not? Did your daily walk go from daily to weekly to non-existent? Are you struggling with those fitted jeans that used to fit and now squeeze the stuffing out of you? Well, if this happened to you, now's the time to get back into a fitness routine. Research shows that most peopole's New Year's resolutions include at least one plan to improve health through nutrition or exercise or both. And don't forget about getting a good night's sleep. That's critical to making you look and feel better. Now's the time to get started. Start small with something doable. You're not training for the Olympics here. Start with a brisk walk for 30 minutes. Add some vegetables to your diet. Eat only 1 cookie instead of 6. Even small changes can result in big dividends. The important thing is to do something--and do it now. Think how glad you'll be in May that you got started now.
